You can check the battery status of your AirTag directly from your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

AirTag is said to offer over a year of battery life with daily use. But that doesn’t mean Apple hasn’t provided an option to keep an eye on the battery life of the AirTag. Your Apple device will notify you with a notification when the AirTag battery is low so you can replace it. There’s also an easy way to replace your existing AirTag battery. Apple’s AirTag includes a convertible CR2032 battery and is widely available at online or offline stores near you.

But before buying a new battery for your AirTag, you should check the status of the current one as the company claims to offer a decent amount of use that should last a year.

Before we get started with the steps to check your AirTag’s battery life, it’s important to note that your device must be connected to the Find My app. Your Apple device, which can be an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, needs to be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular internet to provide accurate details. If both of these conditions are met, you can proceed with the steps below.

  1. Open the Find My app on your Apple device.
  2. Go to the Articles tab.
  3. Now tap on your AirTag name. You will see the battery status right after the AirTag name and location

Apple does not provide the option to examine the exact percentage of remaining battery on your AirTag. However, the battery status available through the Find My app is good enough to suggest when it will need to be replaced.

How to replace the AirTag battery

You can replace your AirTag battery in just a few steps. Before starting the replacement process, make sure you have removed the AirTag from the accessory or case to which it is attached.

  1. Hold the AirTag with the stainless steel battery cover facing you.
  2. Press the lid and turn it counter-clockwise until it stops rotating.
  3. Release your fingers. The battery cover will now open.
  4. Remove the cover and remove the battery, then insert a new one with the positive side of the battery facing you.
  5. After the battery is properly seated, reconnect the cover by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the available slots on the AirTag and pressing it down with gentle pressure.
  6. The AirTag will now play a song to indicate that the new battery is connected.
  7. Turn the lid clockwise until it stops.
